Q: My horse has a best friend who he hates to leave. He refuses to go out alone, but we are working on this. He will go out with other horses, but is quiet, lethargic and seems depressed. I am really worried about this. He is nine years old.

A: Your horse seems to have formed an unusually strong attachment to his friend.

While this is not uncommon, it can be difficult to deal with, especially if your horse becomes dangerous to deal with when separated.

It sounds as though you are already working on getting him out on his own, and you must continue to do so.

Your horse must learn that he can go away from his friend and that his friend will still be there when he gets back. You can do this by gradually lengthening the time they are apart, and if possible, ensure they cannot hear each other when separated.

If he will not accept temporary separation, it may be necessary to break the bond by introducing another horse and removing his friend to a place where they can neither hear, nor see each other.

A small number of horses find separation extremely stressful, and this learning process can be a long and difficult one. Your vet should be able to advise you, or be able to recommend a behavioural specialist, if the problem does not resolve.
